Ventura’s Koyanagi and Karen Carry the Day at WSC Championships
Ventura College freshman Hironori Koyanagi and freshman Corey Karen carried the day at the 2015 Western State Conference Men’s Tennis Singles and Doubles Championships. Not only did the duo meet up in the championship match of the singles bracket, but the two combined to win the WSC doubles championship.

Not only did the duo meet up in the championship match of the singles bracket, but the two combined to win the WSC doubles championship.
Koyanagi, the #1 seed on the single side, battled through the field overcoming a scare in the second round 6-3, 7-5. Koyanagi took both the quarters and the semifinals 6-2, 6-1 and 6-2, 6-4 respectively setting up the meeting with his teammate in the championship match.
Karen meanwhile, had to play an extra match as the #3 overall seed in the tournament opening up with a 6-1, 6-0 win in round one. In the second round, Karen advanced with a 6-2, 6-1 victory, before cruising through the quarterfinals, 6-1 and 6-1. In the semis, Karen met-up with teammate Victor Ribeiro who withdrew. That led Karen to the finals where he battled Koyanagi before falling 6-3, 6-3.
On the doubles side, the duo earned the #1 overall seed and a first round bye. The teammates cruised through quarterfinals winning 6-1, 6-1. In the semi-finals, Koyanagi and Karen got a valiant effort from Glendale College's Christopher Pope and Cameron Braun before winning 6-4, 6-4. In the championship match, the pair took down another set of teammates in unseeded Michael Burr and Guenter Newman, winning 6-1 and 6-4.
