Ventura's Smith; Glendale's Ffrench Named December WSC Athletes of the Month
Ventura men's basketball sophomore guard Jerimiyah Smith and Glendale women's basketball sophomore forward Shadel Ffrench have been named the Western State Conference December Athletes of the Month, announced Wednesday.

In December, guard Jerimiyah Smith led the Pirates to a 5-2 overall record, closing out the month on a four-game winning streak, capped by a 78-76 win over No. 20 College of the Sequoias. Ventura was ranked as high as No. 12 in the state during the stretch, and the team's two losses were by only six points each. Overall, Smith played in all seven games, shooting 68.3 percent from the field (56-82) and 56.3 from beyond the arc. The 6-5 guard scored in double-figures in each contest in December, racking up a career-high 40 points at Bakersfield on December 11 behind 14-of-17 shooting, while adding a 31-point outing at then 16th-ranked Mt. San Jacinto to open the month, shooting 11-of-14 from the field. He counted three double-doubles, pulling down a career-high 14 boards twice during the December stretch.

In December, forward Shadel Ffrench paced the Vaqueros on both sides of the ball, averaging 12.9 points per game and 13.4 rebounds per game. Glendale went 6-2 overall, dropping the two contests to No. 3 Orange Coast and No. 9 MiraCosta, while picking up a 55-51 win over No. 8 Irvine Valley and closing out 2025 on a four-game winning streak. Ffrench scored in double-figures in all but one game, earning double-doubles in five contests, including pulling down a season-high tying 21 boards against Ventura in the final game of the month - 11 of those coming off the offensive glass. Her defense was on point, racking up 17 steals and 18 blocked shots.
